What to play until GTA 6

Last updated: 6 September 2026

GTA 6 lands 19 November 2026. Here are 20 ways to spend the wait in GTA 5 and GTA Online — real challenge formats, not just "replay the story again." Spin the GTA challenge generator right now if you want to start with something concrete instead of reading twenty more ideas first.

How long until GTA 6?

GTA 6 is not out yet — it lands 19 November 2026.

Five story-mode replays worth doing

The main story holds up to a second (or fifth) look better than most open-world games, especially with a constraint attached.

Five things to do in GTA Online that aren't grinding

GTA Online has plenty to do that isn't cash-per-hour optimisation, and none of it needs a money glitch or a modded lobby to enjoy — those are against Rockstar's terms and not something this site will ever suggest.

Five things to do with friends

Five things to do solo when nobody's on

A handful of GTA 6's own confirmed activities already exist in GTA 5 in close enough form to practise now: dirt biking, scuba diving, hunting and base jumping are all confirmed for GTA 6, and all four are already playable in GTA 5 today. Run each one a few times before launch and you'll at least know the general shape of the activity — where to find a dirt bike, how diving controls generally feel, what a base-jump run actually asks of you — even though the specific mechanics in GTA 6 will inevitably differ in the details. To be clear: this is practice using GTA 5's own version of each activity, not a claim about how GTA 6's version will actually work — the mechanics, locations and feel may differ once the real thing is out, and treating this as a preview rather than a prediction is the whole point.

A 10 to 11-week plan

Seventy-plus days is easy to lose to just checking for news every few days instead of actually playing anything. One theme per week between now and launch, at a difficulty tier, gives the wait some real structure instead of being one long holding pattern with an occasional dare thrown in. This table gets rebuilt periodically so it always starts from the current week rather than a fixed date that's already passed by the time you're reading it.

FAQ

When is GTA 6 out?

19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's own product page.

Is GTA 5 still worth playing in 2026?

Yes — it's had over a decade of content added, a huge modding and challenge-run community, and GTA Online is still actively updated. It's also the best possible practice for GTA 6, since several of its confirmed activities already exist in GTA 5's own equivalents.

What should I do in GTA Online before GTA 6?

Anything that isn't pure grinding — races, freeroam events, heists run for fun rather than efficiency, a vehicle meet, or a photo tour. This page lists five specific ideas that skip the money-grind treadmill entirely.

Will my GTA Online progress carry over?

Not confirmed. Rockstar hasn't said whether GTA Online progress, characters or purchases carry over to a GTA 6 online mode — and a GTA 6 online mode isn't even confirmed to exist at launch in the first place. Don't plan around either assumption.

What's the daily challenge?

One dare, the same for everyone worldwide, that changes once a day — no accounts needed, just a shared starting point if you want to compare notes with other players doing the same thing that day.
